Presentation October 2010 - Alcohol/Drugs and Your Child - Now What? More details

Outreach Triangle
We will reach out to educate the community using information, presentations, dialogue and data. Avenues for communication include coalition meetings, our projects, civic organizations, relationships with other social health organizations, political and business organizations, the media and schools.
Awareness Triangle
We will be striving to influence community norms (a community’s view toward a given issue-in our case drug and alcohol) to slowly, over time convince the community to be more conscious of the message it portrays to young people and the community at large by its use, treatment and messaging of drug and alcohol, both publicly and privately.
Change Triangle
Environmental change takes time! Consider the long process of elimination of smoking from enclosed public spaces... it is a decades-long campaign which although effective, has a long way to go. Creation of a healthier community from a perspective of reduced youth (and over time, adult) substance use is a long-term commitment requiring steady effort, evaluation and patience. The coalition expects to be a leading organization in this effort and messaging the community to our efforts, local realities and the scientific risks of substance use is an important component in that work to effect change regarding substance use levels.
Media Triangle
Media, including print, radio and television are appropriate channels to effect environmental change. Media allows communication of science based data on health risks, community awareness building on things we can all do to lessen risk to youth and a conduit to listen to youth.
